Fish the Waimarino streams - on the slopes of Mt Ruapehu

Fly fishing for Rainbow and Brown trout in the Ruapehu District of the Taranaki Fish & Game region

Trout fishing information Every trout angler in New Zealand is required by law to hold a current sports fishing licence. For more information on local sports fishing rules regulations or to purchase your trout licence on line, go to www.fishandgame.org.nz
The sports fishing season in New Zealand starts on the 1st of October each year and runs through to 30 September the following year. Some local fisheries are closed for trout spawning and anglers should refer to the current North Island Sports Fishing Regulation booklet for open and closed season dates, legal equipment and daily bag limits.
An online fishing licence purchase service can be made available at Lahar Farm homestead.
Waimarino District waters and access directions are detailed in the Fish & Game brochure "Sports fishing opportunities in the Ruapehu District"

Lahar Lake is a private pond in the middle of Lahar Farm and was formed by us in 2000. It is spring fed and the lake outlet is the origin of the Taonui Stream, renowned for brown trout.

Lahar Lake is no longer stocked with young trout and public access has been terminated. It has reverted back to it's natural "wild state" and there may or may not be any trout in there!

Lahar Lake however would be a great place to practice your fly casting expertise before you take on the regions remote streams and rivers. A great lake for children to start with a spinning rod to get them used to the action. If you have your own fishing equipment and a fishing licence you may walk out to Lahar Lake and try your luck at some trout fishing.

There is a dingy available near the shore line and two canoes. To cover our O.S.H obligations, come and see us if you want to use them and to obtain the life jackets / paddles.
